NZ tourism hopes to cash-in on Bollywood film

New Zealand will be hoping for a windfall in tourism from India following the production of a major Bollywood movie in Wellington.

According to TVNZ, half of the movie will be filmed in the New Zealand capital and will feature A-list Indian actors Abhishek Bachan and Sonam Kapoor.

The film will include some 600 local extras and even a couple of Maori-speaking roles, the website has reported.

The movie, a remake of the classic picture ‘The Italian Job’, will feature place names like Auckland and Wellington and will expose New Zealand to an audience of millions.

"It’s not just the billion population in India back home, but also the Indian diaspora which is all over the world," the film’s line producer Nirang Desai said.

“It’s going to be huge.”

Around NZ$4 million of Bollywood money will be spent on filming in New Zealand, but a lot more income could be generated if further flicks head to Kiwi shores.

"I already have a few proposals lined up, people wanting to come," Mr Desai said.

The film, called ‘Players’, is due to be released in India in October.
