Save the date: 2018 Tel Aviv Samsung Marathon
On February 24,2017- 40,000 runners from Israel and around the world descended on Tel Aviv for the biggest sporting event in Israel, The Tel Aviv Samsung Marathon, and 150,000 spectators cheered on the runners from the sidelines. This year’s winner, Gezu Belete Mekonen, completed the 42.195 km route with a time of 02:12:12, which means that William Kiprono Yagon, who whizzed through the course with a time of 2:10:30 in 2015, is still the reigning champion of the Tel Aviv Samsung Marathon. A prize of $40,000 USD was set aside for any runner who could complete the marathon with a time under 2:07:59. Runners will just have to return next year and race for that prize.
The race included six urban routes: the Marathon (42.195 km), the Half Marathon (21 km), a 10k Race, a 5k Race, a handcycle race for athletes with disabilities, and two Mini-Marathon courses (500m and 1k) for children.
A member of the AIMS International Association of Marathons, the Tel Aviv Marathon attracts elite runners from all over the world. This year was no exception, with 1,500 international runners enjoying the stunning route that wound its way through the beating heart of the city. Runners started at the Tel Aviv Convention Center in northern Tel Aviv, then followed the route through the city’s most celebrated neighborhoods, including Sarona Market, Rabin Square, and 10km along the white sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Sea.
