When and why did you join the industry?
I have always loved travel and started in tourism when I lived in Paris where I was based for 18 years. I was appointed Regional Manager, Southern Europe for the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) in 1995 and then upon my return to Australia in late 2006, I joined the Board of the SATC where I was a Board director for 8 years.
What do you like most about your job?
Finding interesting angles to promote tourism products and seeking out new ways to galvanise interest.
What’s one of the biggest achievements of your career so far?
I represented a number of destinations and products whilst I was overseas. It’s difficult to single something out but if I had to, putting Kangaroo Island on the map as a must-see for wholesalers and agents in Southern Europe was probably one of my most notable achievements.
What’s the best advice ever given to you and who gave it?
A friend who later become a Minister in the Commonwealth Government said to me when I was young, “Why make an enemy when you can have a friend?” People move around a lot in this industry so forging good relationships is very important.
Who do you admire and see as a role model in the industry?
I admire women who are supportive of other women. Deanna Varga at the Australian National Maritime Museum has done an excellent job in developing the MICE and leisure markets for the museum. Alison Mead at Collette is a great mentor for other women as is Denise Von Wald at Tourism Australia.
What can people expect from your company and what sets it apart from the rest?
We pride ourselves on our tailor-made approach working closely with our clients to achieve the best outcomes possible. We’re always on the lookout for both trade and consumer stories that are a bit different even if they take more time to bring to fruition.
What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
A Canadian wilderness adventure is definitely on my bucket list- bring on the polars and I don’t mean the sweaters! Iran has also always fascinated me with its rich culture and striking architecture.
What’s a memorable travel experience you’ve had (good or bad)?
The Finnish husky safari adventure last January was a real highlight viewing those elusive Northern Lights, sledding through the stark Arctic wilderness and making so many new furry friends. Experiencing the Sami culture was also an enriching encounter.
What are three things you always take with you when travelling?
A change of clothes when there are connecting long haul flights. I’ve been delayed on numerous occasions en route to and from Australia and have really appreciated my spare outfit. When flying, I always carry a sweater as temperatures on board are so variable. If travelling alone, I am always appreciative of my companion Kindle!
Name someone famous you’d like to travel with and a destination you’d like to go with them.
I’ve always admired Kevin Spacey as an actor, so why not ask him to show me around Washington and the House of Cards sites?
What direction do you see the industry heading in over the next five to ten years?
Tourism media is, and will continue to be in a challenging environment as online and social take over from print. From an agent perspective, top level service will be what consumers will look for.
