Australia’s first glamping retreat turns 20

The first ‘glamping’ property in Australia – Paperbark Camp on the NSW South Coast – turns 20 in April, 2019, and to celebrate the milestone birthday of the bush-luxe retreat, Paperbark Camp is offering guests a 20 per cent saving until June as well as a series of special, under-the-stars banquets.

The deluxe eco retreat at Jervis Bay opened on April 27, 1999, as the brainchild of Sydney couple Jeremy and Irena Hutchings who were inspired by the safari tents they saw on an African holiday. Two decades on, Paperbark Camp is as popular with lovers of nature and romance than ever and continues to be at the forefront of ecotourism and luxury camping in Australia.

As the pioneers of glamping in Australia, the Hutchings family still owns the award-winning camp, which attracts guests from across Australia and around the world.

Until June 6, 2019, guests at Paperbark can save 20 per cent on two-night, midweek stays (Sunday-Thursday), with rates now starting at $880 per couple for two nights, including dinners, breakfasts, the use of canoes and paddleboards.

On Saturdays April 27 and May 4, renowned, guest chef, Justin North, will celebrate 20 years of fine dining amongst the gum trees by hosting a Dinner Under the Stars at Paperbark. The special event will feature fireside canapes, local wines, brewed beer and a candlelit banquet starring premium South Coast produce. The three-course dinners, paired with wines, are $150 per person for non-staying guests. The celebrations continue throughout May with more, all-inclusive, under-the-stars banquets on Saturdays May 11, 18 and 25 for $125 per non-staying guests. The wine-paired dinners, which are open to non-staying guests, can be booked on .

Accommodation at Paperbark is available on the dinner weekends in April and May from $1170 per couple for a two-night stay, including dinners, breakfasts and the use of canoes and paddleboards.
